If you’re tired of relying on the metro or Didi and want to explore China on your terms, you’ll need a Chinese driver’s license. Unfortunately, an international license won’t work here. Whether you already have a driving license from your home country or are starting fresh, this guide will walk you through how to get a driver’s license in China. Let’s dive into the process!

Here’s what you’ll need to know, depending on your situation:

  1. How to Get a Chinese Driving License With Your Existing License
  2. How to Apply For a Chinese Driving License for the First Time (If You Don’t Have One)

Obtain A Chinese Driving License with Your Existing License from Another Country

If you already have a driving license from your country and want to obtain a Chinese driving license, you should hold a valid visa or stay/residence permit with a stay period of over three months, and you need to pass a test.Generally, the validity of the Chinese driver’s license is 6 years. You should submit your application to the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) in the city where your residence permit is issued.

*Note: The application for a Chinese driving license is not available for individuals with short stays on tourist visas.

The necessary documents for applying for a Chinese driving license include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Passport with valid visa and residence permit (original and photocopies).
  2. Original temporary residence registration.
  3. Driving license from your country (original and photocopies).
  4. Stamped official Chinese translation of your driving license, along with a copy of the translation company’s business license stamped with an official seal.

*Note:

  1. The translation institution should be recognized for overseas replacement or the embassy & consulate in the country of residence. It’s advisable to prepare a Chinese name in advance.
  2. The policy may vary depending on the city; check the official website or contact the relevant organization for specific details.

About the Test:

The exam consists of 100 questions related to traffic rules, signs, signals, and safe driving. You have 45 minutes to complete the exam and must score at least 90 points to pass. If you fail the first time, you can try again right away. But if you fail twice, you must wait 5 days to retake it. After passing (for C1 or C2 licenses), you usually get your driving license on the same day and don’t need additional driving tests.

Applying For a Chinese Driving License for The First Time (For Those Without a License)

If you don’t have a driver’s license, you must complete a learner driving course and pass four exams. First, you should be at least 18 years old and have a Chinese residence permit. Then, register at a driving school and take the required tests. It’s helpful to get advice from local friends and ask for recommendations on driving schools.

Required documents:

The required documents include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Chinese translation of your passport through an authorized agency with a stamp
  • A Chinese name is required for your Chinese driving license
  • Original and copy of your passport, residence permit, and temporary residence registration
  • Three to five photos with a white background
  • Complete a driver’s medical check

*Note: Usually, you can take the required photos and undergo the medical examination during the sign-up process at the driving school.

After submitting all the necessary documents and paying the fee at the driving school, they will assist with your registration at the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) and help you set up an account on the Traffic Police 12315 App.

Here are the 4 exams you need to pass:

科目一 (Kēmù Yī) – Subject One (Theory Test):  The theory test typically includes questions related to road signs, driving laws, and safety regulations. Usually, the theory test lasts for 45 minutes, and you need to get at least a score of 90 to pass it. You will take this exam on a computer at a related department. If you fail the first time, you can try again right away. But if you fail twice, you must wait 5 days to retake it.

科目二 (Kēmù Èr)-Subject Two (practical driving test): It involves some parking tests and basic driving skills. The test takes place in a designated area, not on real roads.

科目三 (Kēmù Sān)-Subject Three (practical driving test): It is also called the road safety driving test, conducted on a real road. You’ll need to showcase your ability to handle a vehicle, follow traffic rules, and respond to different driving situations.

科目四 (Kēmù Sì)-Subject Four (theory test): It is the last exam. And it has 50 questions on proper driving habits.

In short, if you already have a driving license from your home country, all you’ll need is a theory test. But if you’re starting from scratch, be prepared for more testing to get your Chinese driver’s license. It might take some time, but once you’re done, you’ll be ready to hit the road!
