About School
Wunan Kindergarten, located across three divisions in Shanghai—Preschool Division at No. 14 South Wulumuqi Road, International Division at No. 1480 Middle Huaihai Road, and Domestic Division at No. 1788 Middle Huaihai Road—stands as a prestigious public kindergarten with model status. Positioned in the culturally rich consulate area, the kindergarten is surrounded by landmarks such as the historic International Chapel (built in 1934), which inspired the school’s name, along with the American Consulate, Hengshan Hotel, the Chinese Railway Workers Movement Monument, and prominent former residences.
Founded in 1956, Wunan Kindergarten evolved from the International Chapel Kindergarten and the Kindergarten of the East China Ministry of Health. Renamed Wunan Kindergarten, it quickly pioneered early education by introducing toddler classes in 1958. Emphasizing the integration of education and nurturing care, Wunan has welcomed foreign students since 1984, creating an inclusive environment where international students quickly acquire Chinese language skills.
Wunan’s team comprises highly qualified teachers, averaging 33 years old, with most holding bachelor’s degrees or higher. As one of only 11 kindergartens selected nationally by the Ministry of Education for the “Kindergarten Working Regulations” pilot, Wunan serves as an experimental base for Shanghai’s kindergarten reform. Recognized for its contributions to family education and teacher development, it has earned the title “Shanghai City Civil Unit” for 11 consecutive years.
